Program Background

Since opening in January 2019, the Pūnāwai Rest Stop has delivered essential services to individuals experiencing homelessness - many of whom lack consistent access to restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities.

By integrating essential personal hygiene services with basic case management, Pūnāwai Rest Stop builds rapport and fosters deeper engagement with participants, encouraging them to address barriers to housing, employment, and overall well-being. This holistic approach supports improvements in health and stability, creating pathways toward permanent solutions.

In addition to hygiene services, the Rest Stop offers electronic charging stations, access to clean water, informational materials, and basic case management support. Our case managers assist clients with a wide range of needs, including obtaining identification documents, applying for public benefits and medical coverage, and making referrals for employment and housing. Resources are available in English and other languages to ensure accessibility.

Pūnāwai Rest Stop also serves as a critical access point for our partner agencies working to engage individuals who are often disconnected from traditional services. These partnerships bring vital support directly to our participants.

Regular community partners include The Street Dog Coalition (veterinary care), Legal Aid Society of Hawai‘i, the Public Defender’s Office/Community Outreach Court, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and the Hawai‘i Department of Human Services’ Benefits, Employment, and Support Services Division (BESSD). Medical and behavioral health services are also provided onsite through Kalihi-Palama Health Center (KPHC), Hawai‘i Health & Harm Reduction Center (H3RC), and Gino Behavioral Health.

With the spirit of aloha at our core, we are committed to maintaining a safe, welcoming space where every individual is treated with dignity and respect.
